Introduction
"If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more, and become more, you are a leader."
S. R. Covey - Author and Best selling author
I f leaders have a language what does it sound like and if you can hear the sound of the leadership language what does it feel like. It doesn't matter who you are and where you come from, one thing is certain we are all in a journey. If you agree on this premise that we're all on a journey then we need direction as per our destination. If you are still with me I then welcome you to this discussion ... leadership conversation: how to discover your voice and impact your world.
In this article we have to delve into the meaning of leadership. Perhaps my take on the meaning of leading may be different from yours but my main idea here to for us to share our thoughts.
Created for good works
One of the attributes of we human beings is that we all want increase in every area of our lives. As spritual being that have soul and live in a body we have been made it such a way by our Creator to increase, multiply, replenish and subsue. Lest I forget ... and to do good works in this life.
These attributes to our existence speaks of VALUE ... benefit. Who we are is very important. Who you are determines your worth in this changing world. How do you see yourself. But who you are has something to do with your belief and values which in turn impacts on your take in life ... your attitude. Who you are determines what you do. This is in a nutshell your identity. But your identity is not written in stone. You continue to learn, grow and change and therfore your can be transformed by the renewal of your mind. What you do results in an outcome which people will normall refer to as result or experience you had from a particular action.
We all desire to be productive or effective in the way we rate our performance. But the level of your performance depends a lot on how you are able to use the resources all around you (efficiency) to create the result that you need.
Leaders are trail blazers. Yes! It doesn't matter who they are and where they come. The have the knack to make decisions, take initiativies and hane the audacity and courage to explore and expand their means. They are risk takers, visonaries and go getters. Even when the circumstances around them speak of impossiblity they hear possiblity and are willing to find a way.
Aspire to lead
If you want to take up the challenge to becoem a leader, you have to first and formost develop the habit of excellence. You expand your means and refuse to settle for less when more is possible. This is a habit in iteself. Remember habit is a behaviour - what you do od do not do. It is our habit that has brought us to where we are, this very moment. Note that I said this very moment. Your habit is transcient and can be changed. One this is important. Is is empowering or disempowering? They are three things that come together to create our habit which could over time becoem our character. These are knowledge, skill and experience. As you can see you need to continiously up you game to increase these attributes so as to give yourself uncommon advantage. This also calls for you to always aspire to improve the way you think. Thinking is a displine and by all meand develop your ability to think for yourself. Or atleast model the thoughts of those who have achieved, done and gotten the result of waht you desire to achieve. Develop the mindset, skill set and tool set required to becoem what you want to do. Continue to up your game to the next level. Never settling for less. Remember that you are hare to be more, do more and achieve more.
Idea to reality
Leaderd by the virtue of their calling or discipline create reality. They are able to find their voice ... the reason for their being in a cluttered world. Not just that they find the reason they make it their ifestyle. So what are the skills you need to develop so as to emerge as a leader in your own right. In his book from Good to Great, Steven Covey mentioned these attributes. They are: Vision, Discipline, Conscience and Passion. He referred to them as different types of intelligence. Intelligence is an abiltiy. It is the ability to organise yourself and your environment so that you can enjoy the abundance that life throws at you.
Let's look at each of these skills briefly.
Vision has to do with using your mind to envision what it is you dersire to bring birth to. It is said that where ther is no vison people perish. Leaders lead with great vision. But vision in itself without translating it to reality is of no use. Your main question is what is it that you want to do. You need ...
Discipline is the willingness to stay with it and refusing to give up until what you want is achieved. It is the knowledge, facts, information, wisdom and data you need to get the work done - process. It is the abilty to take advantage of the resources you have to get the best result you can. The main question here is how to achieve what you want But you need
Conscience is the spiritual intelligence which informs you that the desire you want to bring birth to is worth the effort, time, resources and money. Well some leaders who were taught to be great were insignificant when their work was weighed in the scale of conscience. The reason is that with conscience you let God to be God and forgo all personal ego. You need to challenge your self to the why you need to do what you desire to do. However you need ...
Passion is the enthusiasm you have not just to start the endavour but to complete it even in the face of oppositions. It is the culmination of the reason for the what, the how, the why that give you the "sticktoitness" to continue and to deliver the goods. If you have passion for the idea that you want to bring to birth, it makes you to wake up very early and forge ahead despite, fears, roadblocks and considerations. Most of thes are at the spitual, mental and physical levels
I'll leave you with this quote from Abraham Lincoln, American President:
"Determine that the thinking can and shall be done and then we shall find the way."
What is it that you had wanted to do or achieve recently? Look at them in the light of these four areas. Which areas do you need to develop? I'll like to share your thoughts. Let the leadership conversation start.
